The study of the ad hoc expert group identified several international initiatives that were contributing in a significant way to increasing the use of space based technologies in support of disaster management activities.

The role of this committee will be to support the experts and facilitate coordination between them throughout the year and to promote the standing of the special procedures system within the broader framework of the United Nations and its human rights programmes.
