8.1 Everyone has the right to adequate housing.

In Canada, most households can afford adequate and suitable housing through the private market.

The Government was striving to provide them all with adequate housing and with education in their own language.

Moreover, if the housing deficit is diagnosed as a dearth of adequate housing, then the solution is to build more houses for those who lack it that is, the poor.

The vast majority of us live in Third World conditions denied access to adequate housing, health care, and education.

17.3 In cases where evictions of secondary occupants are justifiable and unavoidable, States should take positive measures to protect those who do not have the means to access any other adequate housing other than that which they are currently occupying from homelessness and other violations of their right to adequate housing.

Canada's Fourth Report on the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (paragraph 333) describes the Core Housing Need model used to determine whether a household's housing is considered adequate, suitable and affordable.

The Special Rapporteur on adequate housing emphasized on several occasions the disproportionate effects of house demolitions on women, children and the elderly.

In the light of its general recommendation XXX, the Committee proposes action specifically to guarantee the equal enjoyment of the right to adequate housing for citizens and non citizens, especially by avoiding segregation in housing and ensuring that housing agencies refrain from engaging in discriminatory practices.

Where social ministries are under resourced, disempowered, or lack qualified staff, basic rights to adequate health care, education, and housing will remain unfulfilled.

Article 11 of the Covenant recognizes that housing is an essential element of the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living.
