Maybe the collapse stems from lousy internal controls in financial firms that, swaddled by implicit government guarantees, lavish their employees with enormous rewards for risky behavior.

But, nowadays, research increasingly is misdirected toward lucrative prizes, professional recognition, and financial gains rewards that are suffocating the creativity and passion that scientific progress demands.

Developments must be combined with more innovative compensation and reward structures with universities aligned to national objectives.

The latest bonus rules issued by the Committee of European Banking Supervisors (soon to morph into the European Banking Authority), have left those sensitive souls on the trading floors feeling rather bruised and unloved.

Obstacles to accelerated progress

Collectively, their employees shared more than 36 billion dollars in bonuses last year, thanks to the huge profits these institutions earned on their risky and aggressive business strategies.

Already heavily burdened taxpayers saw their money intended to help banks lend so that the economy could be revived go to pay outsized bonuses and dividends.

The award system underpins the system of agreement making at the workplace level, which is particularly suited to tailoring working arrangements in ways that assist employees to balance work and family commitments.

This could consist of medical or psychological assistance, help with social or financial reintegration through vocational training for victims or legal assistance to secure compensation for victims or members of their families.

Considerable progress in adopting legislation required by the study has been made.

The question for companies is the extent to which those virtual rewards are translated back into purchasing behavior (and the ability to command higher prices).
