The representative of ILO informed the meeting about progress in the development of the consolidated maritime labour convention and a convention and recommendation concerning work in the fishing sector.

ILO Convention No. 105 concerning the Abolition of Forced Labour (1998)

He noted that the need for a labour force to pick cotton had prevented Uzbekistan from ratifying International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 182 on child labour.

Recalling also the International Labour Organization Convention concerning the Prohibition and Immediate Action for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour, 1999 (Convention No. 182), which prohibits forced or obligatory labour of all people under the age of 18,

Also welcomes the efforts undertaken by the International Maritime Organization and the International Labour Organization to develop guidelines on fair treatment of seafarers in the event of a maritime accident, as a way of enhancing the protection of the basic human rights of seafarers detained in connection with maritime accidents

53. Encourages States to ratify or accede to international agreements addressing the safety and security of navigation, as well as maritime labour, and to adopt the necessary measures consistent with the Convention, aimed at implementing and enforcing the rules contained in those agreements

Also welcomes the adoption by the International Maritime Organization of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments,International Maritime Organization, document BWM CONF 36, annex. and calls upon States to become parties to that Convention

(e) By adhering to internationally recognized labour standards and considering as a matter of priority joining the International Labour Organization and becoming a party to the International Labour Organization Convention concerning Forced or Compulsory Labour, 1930 (No. 29) and the Convention concerning the Prohibition and Immediate Action for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour, 1999 (No. 182)

Other key governing bodies would include the World Health Assembly, which will meet in May 2006, the International Labour Conference in June 2006, and the FAO Council in 2006.

(b) The International Labour Organization Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, 1989 (No. 169).

32. Also welcomes the work of the International Labour Organization to consolidate and modernize international maritime labour standards, and calls upon Member States to take an active interest in the development of these new standards for seafarers and fishers

41. Welcomes the work of the International Maritime Organization in developing amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and to the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue on the delivery of persons rescued at sea to a place of safety

(b) To take immediate action to implement fully concrete legislative, executive and administrative measures to eradicate the practice of forced labour and to implement fully the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry established to examine the observance by Myanmar of the International Labour Organization Convention concerning Forced or Compulsory Labour (Convention No. 29)

(d) The ratification in 2001 of the Minimum Age Convention, 1973 (No. 138) and the Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention, 1999 (No. 182)

30. Urges all States that have not yet signed and ratified or acceded to the Convention concerning Minimum Age for Admission to Employment, 1973 (Convention No. 138) and the Convention concerning the Prohibition and Immediate Action for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour, 1999 (Convention No. 182) of the International Labour Organization to consider doing so

The Convention establishing the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was adopted on 6 March 1948 and entered into force on 17 March 1958.

Of those, 8.4 million are trapped in the worst forms of child labour as defined in ILO Convention No. 182, including some 5.7 million in forced and bonded labour.

Maritime Security

47. Governments should consider, as a matter of priority, the ratification and effective implementation of the Convention concerning the Prohibition and Immediate Action for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour, 1999 (Convention No. 182) of the International Labour Organization.

Governments are urged to promote and ratify the International Labour Organization Convention on equal pay for equal work.

The Libyan Arab Jamahiriya was one of the signatories to the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Convention No. 182 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) concerning the Prohibition and Immediate Action for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour.

2006 COP 8 The eighth ordinary meeting of the parties to the convention took place in March 2006, in Curitiba, Brazil.

Mauritius deposited its instrument of accession to the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation in August 2004.

The International Maritime Organization indicated that the special measures to enhance maritime security, adopted in the Framework of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, would contribute to the achievement of the objectives of General Assembly resolution 59 80.

His delegation respectfully disagreed with the assertion that certain of the proposed amendments to the 1988 Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) had potential negative implications for the NPT .
