E. Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land based Activities and associated programmes

(a) Sources of marine debris (the main land based and sea based sources of marine debris, including fisheries activities) (see A 60 63, paras. 236 240)

The pollution of the marine environment through our land based activities such as the dumping of waste, as well as unregulated shipping activities, has become a concern for all.

To address the fact that nearly 80 per cent of the pollution in the oceans originates from land based sources, the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land based Activities was adopted in 1995.

In the ROPME Sea Area (the Kuwait Convention region), litter is an increasing problem, generated from land, shore and ship based activities.

That natural treasure house is now under the increasing threat of pollution caused both by land based activities and by ocean going vessels.

In pre colonial times land was vested in groups which were based on common descent, residence in a particular area and participation in various activities.

The Global Plan of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land based Activities is seen as an important instrument for that purpose.

5. Calls upon all relevant States to take the necessary steps to bring into force, and to support the implementation of, the Protocol Concerning Pollution from Land based Sources and Activities,See www.cep.unep.org law. in order to protect the marine environment of the Caribbean Sea from land based pollution and degradation

The Integrated Rural Development Programme (PDRI) covers land improvement and drainage activities and provides commercial credit.
