For Thaksin s opponents, the sale of these assets to a foreign company owned by a foreign government amounted to putting Thailand s economic sovereignty on the block.

But now we see Asian companies beginning to acquire valuable US owned economic assets witness India s Tata Group s proposed acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford.

As a result, China surpassed Japan in late 2008 as the largest foreign holder of US financial assets.

Although individual foreign investors can sell the dollar securities that they own, they can only sell them to other foreign investors. As long as the US has a current account deficit, the stock of foreign owned claims on the US economy must rise.

British regulators will never again rely on the Icelandic authorities, and Eastern European countries will be reluctant to remain dependent on foreign owned banks.

One might think that foreign investors would quake in terror at these terms and shy away from dollar denominated assets.

By contrast, the return on US government securities, which form the bulk of China s foreign assets, was next to nothing.
