Moreover, there already is a proliferation of regional development banks, from the Inter American Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank to the more modestly capitalized African Development Bank. These institutions cooperate with the World Bank.

Mr. Elbakly (Egypt) wished to know the status of the ongoing discussions between UN Habitat and the African Development Bank about investing in Africa's urban development along the lines of the cooperation established between UN Habitat and the Asian Development Bank.

In a similarly organized meeting, INSTRAW collaborated with the Asian Development Bank to examine gender perspectives in remittances in this region.

Seventeen regional technical assistance projects were also approved by the Asian Development Bank for US 7 million to promote long term development in the Greater Mekong Subregion.

The new governor of the Bank of Japan, Haruhiko Kuroda, comes with a wealth of experience gained in the finance ministry, and then as President of the Asian Development Bank.
