(a) Support and advice to official and private sector decision making bodies on techno economic development options for strengthening the agro industrial sector (food, leather, textiles, wood and agro machinery)

The region's greatest potential lies in the agro industry sector with the food, leather, textile and wood sectors having been identified by NEPAD and APCI as the priority subsectors.

These services comprise post harvest systems in the food sector, fibre processing, product innovation and diversification for enhanced market access, and enhancing rural community livelihood through efficient agro supply chains.

Food safety in rural areas Agro processing Information exchange soils, climate and conservation agriculture.

These should be governing principles in designing all agro policy, economic, agro technical and zoo technical measures for sustainable development of agriculture and food production in future.

(e) Europe and the NIS The region has a significant potential for developing the agro industrial sector.

(b) Capacity building at the institutional and industry levels to enhance industrial productivity and marketing performance in the agro industrial sector

Special emphasis is given to various agro industrial subsectors and to strengthening private sector organizations, such as chambers of commerce and industry.

Nowadays there are 111 women's agro tourist cooperatives and agro manufacture cooperatives.

It promoted coordination of initiatives on the safe and environmentally sound utilization of genetic engineering, especially in the agricultural and agro food sectors.

In addition to agro processing, other components of the programme should include policy, institutional support, effective public private sector partnerships and technology transfer.

In the Andean countries, the Office has supported generating agro industries with proven markets, producing cash and food crops, agroforestry productive systems and microenterprises.

CABDA proceeds through specific areas of intervention such as the introduction of drought resistant crops and new methods of food production such as agro forestry.

This project was launched by the Director General on 11 March 2005, and focuses on agro and food processing and on the pulp and paper sectors.

A vibrant rural sector can generate demand for locally produced goods and services, thereby stimulating sustainable employment growth in agro processing, services, and small scale manufacturing.

Meanwhile, the agro industry sector is being improved in order to strengthen urban rural linkages, which are critical for job creation, poverty reduction and combating hunger.

General description There is a need for the developing countries to build up a more energy efficient and environmentally sustainable agro processing sector, especially in the leather, textile, wood and food industries, as well as a need for sustainable land management to fight desertification and increase land productivity.

The interventions build on commodities and the related secondary agro processing industries with emphasis on food (e.g. fish, meat, dairy, vegetable oils) and non food (wood and non wood forest products, textiles and garments, leather and skins) products.

The sector specific services are intended to meet the requirements of the food and non food agricultural processing industries.

Recent regulations and private sector standards in the food sector present new challenges for developing country exporters of horticultural products.

In addition to the food sector, WFP also participates in logistics, communications, security and field coordination.

While resources for emergency food needs for the remainder of the year have already been met, the response to the non food sector remains a concern.

More specifically, the services address issues related to post harvest systems in the food sector, covering post harvest technology, food availability and accessibility, food safety and quality, and improved market access for developing countries.

Some countries are also trying to develop horticulture and agro forestry.

Its robust agricultural sector is a massive exporter of food, benefiting from the growing appetites of consumers in developing countries.

TPN 2 on agroforestry has completed its draft manual on dryland agro forestry.

Nigeria also welcomed Major Programme E, which provided assistance to improving the entrepreneurial and technical skills of rural and women entrepreneurs, as well as stimulating the productive capacities of micro, small and medium enterprises, especially in the agro industry sector.

(d) Latin America and the Caribbean Within this region, the components aiming at production and export capacity building, i.e. investment and technology promotion, private sector development and agro industries, will be of particular relevance to the Andean countries and Central America.

As a cross cutting service, technical assistance is also provided for developing the agricultural machinery manufacturing sector by establishing rural technology centres for technology transfer and appropriate repair and maintenance of basic agricultural tools and agro processing equipment in rural areas.

As most of the economies in the region are rural and agriculture based, promotion of an efficient and competitive agro based industrial sector can promote growth and create income generation opportunities for the poor and help alleviate many social problems.

Forest products, coffee, palm oil, palm heart and natural rubber grown under ecologically sustainable agro forestry and forest management systems, processed and marketed through agro industries with farmer participation, have proved to be the most viable alternatives.

Men predominate in construction, transport, agro forestry fisheries, gas and electricity, manufacturing and public administration.

In the food sector, these services are intended to help developing countries reduce high post harvest losses and increase levels of value added.

A concrete example. One of the first framework agreements was signed in 1988 in the food sector between the French multinational Danone and the International Union of Food, Agricultural, Hotel, Restaurant, Catering, Tobacco and Allied Workers' Associations.

Another problem is that fewer and fewer transnational agro businesses now dominate marketing, production, and inputs.

(d) Participation in the work of international organizations and normative bodies, the promotion of research on priority novel commodities, the preparation of training manuals and tool kits for agro processing technologies, and the dissemination of agro industrial information for decision making.

Emphasis will be placed on entrepreneurship development (with special focus on rural and women's entrepreneurship), the development of horizontal and vertical SME networks for ensuring job creation and income generation, and the strengthening of agro based and agro related industries.
