Report of the International Narcotics Control Board

Recommendations contained in the report of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs on its forty eighth session

In February, the Commission for Social Development carried out its 10 year review of the social development agenda set out in Copenhagen and at the twenty fourth special session of the General Assembly.

The Commission for Social Development, in trying to counter this trend, has sought to highlight the broader social development picture first portrayed in Copenhagen.

6. Requests the Commission for Social Development to make appropriate suggestions and recommendations to the General Assembly, through the Economic and Social Council, to further the contribution of volunteering to social development

The Standard Rules provide for the appointment of a Special Rapporteur to monitor the implementation of the Rules, and to report yearly to the Commission for Social Development.

9. Requests the Special Rapporteur, to submit an annual report on the monitoring of the implementation of the Standard Rules to the Commission for Social Development.

The Council held a discussion on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (agenda item 14 (e)) at its 35th and 36th meetings, on 21 and 22 July 2005 (see E 2005 SR.35 and 36). It had before it a letter dated 8 March 2005 from the Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary General (E 2005 46).

8. Requests the Commission for Social Development to integrate an ageing perspective in its consideration of priority themes related to the follow up to the World Summit for Social Development

Emphasizing the need to enhance the role of the Commission for Social Development in the follow up and review of the World Summit for Social Development and the outcome of the twenty fourth special session of the General Assembly,

In New Zealand, Government departments are required to prepare gender implication statements to the Cabinet Social Development Committee.

2. Requests the Secretary General to transmit the report of the Ad Hoc Committee to the Commission for Social Development at its forty first session and to the Commission on Human Rights at its fifty ninth session

At the 1999 Commission for Social Development, FI submitted an intervention on strengthening global financial architecture to finance social services, and in 2000 a statement advocating for greater social justice.

The 10 year review of the Copenhagen Summit by the Commission for Social Development had provided an opportunity to assess the level of implementation.

It was in that same context that an annual draft resolution on the implementation of the social objectives of the New Partnership for Africa's Development was introduced by the Group of 77 and China in the agenda of the Commission for Social Development.

We state our trust in the Commission on Social Development to fulfil these urgent needs of families and to attain the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

As a result of a comprehensive reappraisal of the role of the Commission, the Council, in its resolution 1139 (XLI) of 29 July 1966, renamed it the Commission for Social Development to clarify its role as a preparatory body of the Council for the entire range of social development policy.

The seven intergovernmental committees are (a) the Statistical Committee (b) the Committee on Social Development (c) the Committee on Energy (d) the Committee on Water Resources (e) the Committee on Transport (f) the Technical Committee on Liberalization of Foreign Trade and Economic Globalization in the countries of the ESCWA region and (g) the Committee on Women.

The following panellists made presentations Carmen María Gallardo Hernández (El Salvador), Chairperson of the Commission on the Status of Women Ernesto Araníbar Quiroga (Bolivia), Chairperson of the Commission for Social Development and Crispin Grey Johnson (Gambia), Chairperson of the Commission on Population and Development.

7 This builds on the experience of the Commission on Sustainable Development, which implemented a two year cycle for its 2004 and 2005 sessions, and the plans of the Commission for Social Development and the Commission on Population and Development to introduce a two year cycle from 2007.

The Commission for Social Development emphasized the need for more integrated efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and implement the broader Copenhagen commitments.

The NGO Committee for Social Development sees the positive experience of the recent 43rd Commission on Social Development as an example of governments and NGOs working together towards a greater goal and, therefore, achieving more than either entity could working separately.

The debate at the Commission for Social Development pointed out that progress in implementing the Copenhagen Declaration in social integration has lost ground.
