While Western firms investing in China must face the prospect of protest and criticism back home from pro Tibet campaigners, some companies are coming under pressure in China itself.

China has so far lost money on two of its major investments in Western financial firms (Morgan Stanley and Blackstone).

Insofar as some Chinese firms do lag behind Western standards, they are becoming increasingly sensitive to foreign criticism and are learning fast.

To be sure, eastern enlargement is leading to an increase in West European exports, because more markets have been opened in which western firms can sell their products.

But, compared with Chinese private entrepreneurs, representatives of large Western firms are a privileged group, and are not victimized as frequently by official corruption.

But there is perhaps a deal to be done with the Chinese on investing their reserves and with Western multinationals on the tax treatment of repatriated profits.
