In the area of human rights, we support the elevation of the Commission on Human Rights to a Human Rights Council, a body that would be apolitical and insist on the protection both of civil and political rights and of economic, social and cultural rights.

We endorse fully the idea of transforming the Commission on Human Rights into a Human Rights Council and would have liked the outcome document to contain concrete provisions on the mandate and structure of the new Human Rights Council.

The Human Rights Council should follow up on all the positive and constructive features of the existing Human Rights Commission.

Likewise, we support the proposal to convert the Human Rights Commission into a human rights council.

Inputs received will be the basis of a report on follow up submitted annually to the Commission on Human Rights Human Rights Council.

The creation of the Human Rights Council and the strengthening of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights provided an excellent opportunity to draw lessons from the past and formulate new procedures ensuring the complete depoliticization of human rights issues.

Their use of inquisitorial methods, double standards and politicization of human rights had undermined the work of the Commission on Human Rights and would doom the Human Rights Council to failure.

The future Human Rights Council too will be of relevance to promoting and protecting the rights of women.

For the Human Rights Council to be effective it will have to be different from the Commission on Human Rights and avoid politicization through selectivity and double standards.

Decides that the Commission on Human Rights, including all its mechanisms and procedures, will continue to function pending the commencement of the work of the human rights council.

The proposal to create a new Human Rights Council to replace the Commission on Human Rights certainly needs further consideration.

The projected Human Rights Council should be a subsidiary body of the General Assembly.
