17 22. Environmental indicators

Ecological indicators are mentioned as still undeveloped.

2. Recognizes that the subject of environmental indicators is a cross cutting issue

Recently, the system of environmental indicators of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) was established.

To advance the development and use of environmental indicators, the Division of Early Warning and Assessment and the Regional Office for West Asia developed guidelines on the development and use of environmental indicators in the region.

Having considered the report of the Executive Director on environmental indicators, UNEP GC.17 5 Add.2, part II.

The Division will attach high priority to the development of methodologies in areas of environmental indicators and integrated environmental economic accounting and technical support for their implementation at the national level.

Their performance should be evaluated with objective evaluation criteria, including indicators relating to human rights, human development, adjustment and restructuring efforts and environmental programmes.

Among other activities, UNEP is supporting the data collection work and development of environmental indicators for the countries of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The development of these indicators should be based on a thorough understanding of gender relations in a society and the ways in which such relations influence environmental concerns.

Its more concentrated population and more easily accessible health care system have given this region better health indicators than the rest of the country.

There are 48 indicators in all.

We are seeing some new signs.

As noted in paragraph 5 above, the proportion of land area covered by forests is one of the indicators associated with the Millennium Development Goal on environmental sustainability.
