Welcoming the Secretary General's continuous engagement in the search for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem,

Direct negotiations among the parties are indispensable in the pursuit of a final settlement of the conflict.

As Chairman of the Committee, I thank them all for their keen interest, staunch support and active participation in the quest for a peaceful settlement to the Israeli Palestinian conflict.

When trying to solve the question of Darfur, it is also necessary to sustain the hard won results in the North South peace process.

President Mbeki's initiative on behalf of the African Union provides yet another opportunity for reflection by the parties concerned, and lends momentum to the parties to the conflict to go the extra mile needed to pursue a peaceful settlement.

The Israeli strategy of peacemaking therefore oscillates between two visions while the Israeli left gives priority to the Palestinian problem, the Israeli right prefers pursuing a settlement with the big Arab powers.

We urge all the parties to work towards a comprehensive and lasting political settlement and, in particular, rapidly to adopt a declaration of principles, in order to put an end to the ongoing conflict as quickly as possible.

But Kosovo s government also has an interest in a settlement.
