As for the most important matter that affects people's rights it is the right to housing (shelter)

In that context, the Council would pay serious attention to the housing problems of the Roma community with a view to the practical realization of their right to housing.

The meeting also recommends the integration of economic, social and cultural rights, such as the right to housing, into the work of women's organizations.

To this extent it is important to recognize protection from forced evictions as a distinct element of the right to housing.

It follows, then, that the right to equality could be violated even where another legal right to, say, housing or employment does not exist.

They also point out that, while the domestic Constitution does not protect the right to housing, it does give precedence to international treaties such as, in addition to the Convention, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which protects the right to housing and prohibits discrimination.

A number of delegations considered that basic economic and social rights, such as housing, were not adequately reflected.

We cannot separate the right to housing from these other rights.

The Committee recalls in this connection its general comments No. 4 (1991) on the right to adequate housing (article 11, paragraph 1, of the Covenant) and No. 7 (1997) on the right to adequate housing (article 11, paragraph 1, of the Covenant) forced evictions, and requests the State party to provide further information on the number and nature of forced evictions in its next periodic report.

The Millennium Development Goals represent an important opportunity to ensure that women's human rights are fully realized, including their right to adequate housing.

In the case in question, Roma families had been camping illegally on land near the Olympic stadium on which facilities were to be built.

We cannot separate the right to housing from these other rights. It is simply not possible.
