Establishment of the Department of Safety and Security

The Department of Political Affairs, the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Safety and Security are working to address those challenges.

The Department sponsors a Security Information Group composed of the following offices and departments of the Secretariat the Department of Political Affairs, the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the Department of Safety and Security and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The new Department, headed by an Under Secretary General, amalgamates the former Office of the United Nations Security Coordinator, the Security and Safety Service and the security component of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

The George W. Bush administration consolidated many of these activities under the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), a new cabinet department established as a result of the Homeland Security Act of 2002.

Compliance with the minimum operating security standards at many UNODC offices was verified by the Department of Safety and Security.

In the meantime, the Executive Office of the Department of Management continues to provide some functional support to the Department of Safety and Security.

The Public Security Department (PSD), the Gendarmerie (Darak), and the General Intelligence Department (GID) have successfully managed to prevent mayhem with little confrontation and aggression with the street.

Joint teams of Department of Safety and Security and Department of Peacekeeping Operations staff had visited Haiti, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Côte d'Ivoire to initiate implementation of integrated security structures, and visits to other peacekeeping missions were envisaged.

With regard to safety and security, the report condemned the killing of military and civilian officers of several peacekeeping missions, and stressed the importance of greater coordination between the Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Department of Safety and Security.

It welcomed the measures taken at United Nations Headquarters to enhance security consciousness, including the very important step of establishing the Department of Safety and Security.
