Women have the same legal status as men in civil relations

According to the 2001 Annual Report of the Port Vila Civil Status Unit, Vila Central Hospital reported 1,625 births but the Civil Status Unit registered only 421 or 26 per cent.

Article 32 (a) of the Act provides that all corrections of personal status entries listed in the vital statistics register or the civil status register are to be made pursuant to a decision of the competent court (the magistrate's court).

Methods of data collection include such quantitative methods as censuses, household surveys, vital registration and health status and service records systems, as well as qualitative methods (focus groups and participatory inquiries).

However, the introduction of matrimonial regimes in the draft Civil Code amendments offers spouses the opportunity to choose the status under which they will administer their property.

A single, secular, national Civil Code governing personal status was essential to strengthen equality in society and to help the Government in its implementation of the Convention.

A naturalized Jordanian therefore enjoys all rights and privileges granted to Jordanians in general, which entitles him to correct errors appearing in his name in accordance with articles 32 to 35 of the Personal Status Act No. 9 of 2001 concerning the correction of entries in the personal status records.
