In resolution 59 276 of 23 December 2004, the General Assembly created the Department of Safety and Security (DSS), which involved the merger of UNSECOORD, the Safety and Security Service, and the field security component of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

The Department of Peacekeeping Operations commenced advertising field vacancies in Galaxy in 2004.

The Group noted the progress made by the Department of Safety and Security in filling headquarters posts but was concerned about the delays in recruiting Field Service staff, which should have been the first priority.

Proposed activities of the Training and Evaluation Service of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations

Twenty six field security coordination officers, agency field security officers and Department of Peacekeeping Operations field safety advisers or chief security advisers attended and successfully completed this intensive five day programme.
