They are gradually finding a place at the negotiating table, in the implementation of peace agreements, and in post conflict rehabilitation, reconstruction and disarmament.

Another key factor for successful post conflict reconstruction is the provision of financial support at an early stage.

The Secretary General's progress report relating to the causes of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa (A 60 182) highlights in particular the need for special attention to post conflict reconstruction and peacebuilding, which is of significant relevance to Africa.

To many countries with the experience of conflict, but also that of building national capacities and institutions post conflict, that link is clear.

The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) secretariat has been tasked by the AU with developing a strategic policy framework for post conflict reconstruction.

The largest UNIFEM programmes in this area support the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in every region and the promotion of gender justice in post conflict reconstruction in over 20 countries.

In order to achieve success in the post war confidence building process it is essential to include women as active participants in post conflict reintegration and reconstruction.
