The national statistical offices responsible for industrial statistics look for advice and guidance from the Statistical Commission for the development and organization of their statistical system.

The United Nations Statistics Division, as mandated by the Statistical Commission, assists in donor coordination in statistical capacity activities.

Given the significance of the statistical work of HDRO and the challenge of ensuring that the rigorous statistical work in the HDR meets the highest professional standards, every year one informal thematic consultation has been devoted to discussing statistical issues.

The Commission recognized that there is a role for the Division to play in donor coordination and recommended that the Division, together with the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities, carefully review what coordination mechanisms would be most suitable and effective.

At the 2004 Plenary, the Working Group on Statistics was tasked to undertake a study, in consultation with Participants, of aspects of national methodologies which constrain statistical reporting.

Lack of statistics and statistical capacity in the least developed countries pose a serious challenge to their proper monitoring and reporting on national implementation of the Programme of Action.
