In accordance with Security Council resolution 1626 (2005), UNMIL assumed responsibility for the provision of security to the Special Court for Sierra Leone on 1 December 2005.

Household income must rise, and, with more ample provision of social security, insurance, and services, precautionary savings should fall.

This includes addressing China s patchy arrangements for income security, as well as its unevenly distributed provision of social services, such as health and education, in particular, in rural areas.

Concerns that current pension and social security schemes are not sustainable in the long term are prevalent and, in some instances, create tensions concerning resource allocation and service provision.

We hope that the Security Council will support the continued provision of security to the Special Court, as the Court was created as a part of the overall effort of the international community to bring lasting peace and stability to Sierra Leone.
