Equality counsellors had the responsibility of promoting equal opportunities and monitoring the implementation of relevant legislation, inter alia by receiving complaints of gender based discrimination.

The Commission's work includes promoting and monitoring compliance with equal treatment legislation and any associated tasks.

In the Community Initiative EQUAL, axis 4 with the general goal Equal opportunities for both women and men contributes to the promotion of Pillar 4 of the National Action Plan for Employment Reinforcing the equality of opportunities between men and women .

The Department for Equal Opportunities in the Slovak Republic, set up in 1999, carries out annual evaluations of the National Action Plan for Women and the Concept of Equal Opportunities Between Women and Men, in collaboration with other line ministries.

Furthermore, they will designate Equal Opportunities Coordinators in order to advance gender equality at the local level.

One of the special goals of the Community Initiative is the promotion of equal opportunities for women.
