Social welfare and child protection laws guarantee the rights set out by international standards and incorporated into the basic conventions of the International Labour Organization in this area.

Labour standards are especially important in economies that do not have established social security systems. They are generally designed to protect workers from the arbitrary actions of employers.

Social sustainability evaluation criteria include such areas as employment (quality, including quality of employment and compliance with labour standards), equality and access to essential services such as energy services.

Where labour law reform is being implemented, all efforts should be made to ensure that appropriate health and safety standards are maintained and that workers receive the necessary social protection.

Young people urge Member States to comply with internationally agreed labour standards, to ensure the fair pricing of commodities on the global market and to balance environmental integrity with economic growth.
