The same member States attending the presentation have already committed themselves to the decent work agenda, and the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, with a focus on eliminating child labour and guaranteeing women equal access to labour markets, sustainable employment and adequate labour protection.

These principles and rights include freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining, the elimination of forced or compulsory labour, the abolition of child labour and the elimination of discrimination in employment and occupation.

The Global Compact was launched by the Secretary General in January 1999 during the World Economic Forum to bring private companies together with United Nations entities, labour and civil society to support nine principles in the areas of human rights, labour and environment.
