The current disaster relief efforts have brought to the fore the increasingly vital role played by civil society and non governmental organizations in providing effective emergency relief and rehabilitation.

The overall goal of UNOSAT in the area of disaster management is to facilitate physical planning and programme implementation by local authorities, project managers and field personnel working in emergency response and risk prevention.
