5.48 At UNDOF, UNTSO observers conduct inspections, patrols and liaison in the area of limitation and maintain observation posts and patrols in the area of separation.

Mines still pose a threat to members of the Force and to the inhabitants in the area of separation.

Five minutes later, a violent explosion was heard and seen in the same area and a piece of shrapnel fell close to the Iraqi units inside the area of separation.

UNDOF assisted the International Committee of the Red Cross with facilities for mail and for the passage of persons through the area of separation.

UNDOF is deployed within and close to the area of separation (see attached map), with base camps and logistic units located nearby.

At present it maintains 16 positions and 6 outposts and conducts 19 daily patrols at irregular intervals in the area of separation.

UNDOF supervised the area of separation by means of fixed positions and patrols to ensure that military forces of either party were excluded from it.

At the same time, an RPG 7 rocket was heard exploding opposite the Firyal post at coordinates 4985 inside the area of separation.

At 0800 hours, intermittent light weapons fire was heard in the vicinity of the area facing the Iranian Ta apos us guard post at geographical coordinates 574396 inside the area of separation. It continued until 0850.

At present, it maintains 18 positions and 7 outposts, and conducts 26 daily patrols at irregular intervals on predetermined routes in the area of separation.

10. At 1955 hours on 17 May, five Iranian soldiers were observed fortifying an abandoned position at geographical coordinates 517506 inside the area of separation.

The separation of military and police functions and the establishment of a Criminal Law and Judicial Advisory Unit introduced new capacities in the area of rule of law.

In the Wadi Ar Raqqad, new patrol paths were created in the area of separation which enable UNDOF to operate more easily in this difficult terrain.

The Syrian authorities have continued to lay mines and replace old ones in the area of separation along its eastern edge (see S 24821, para. 11).

(b) At 1000 hours, four men from the Iranian zone were seen at geographical coordinates 905245 building a new guard post inside the area of separation.
