In 2004, the ESA, 2000 was amended to create an entitlement to family medical leave. Employees are entitled to take an unpaid leave of up to eight weeks to provide care or support to a seriously ill specified family member.

The right to annual leave is determined by law to be at least 18 days, while for underage workers this leave is to last for at least 24 work days.

Any State that might be willing to admit hundreds or even a few thousand may well be reluctant to accept entry entitlement as of right or to accept the entitlement of some, if that is thought to imply the entitlement of all.

All other increases of annual leave are regulated through collective contracts and the book of regulation and rules at work.

This structure is also able to compensate for lack of staff owing to absences, particularly on annual leave, in the teams.

The single parent family leave may not coincide with the end or the beginning of the regular paid annual leave and it applies to parents with children up to the age of 12.

The bill to provide this entitlement is currently before parliament.

That leave may be combined with the regular annual leave or may be used separately (all at once or in installments) at a time agreed to by the employer (article 171 of the Labour Code).
