The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is continuing its efforts to improve disaster management by broadening participation in the disaster assessment and coordination teams.

The selection criteria were raised at the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination Advisory Board meeting on 27 February 2006, and included letters sent to Governments requesting nominations for United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination induction courses.

He cited examples of cooperation projects, conducted with bilateral assistance, focused on vulnerability assessment, disaster preparedness and risk management, integrated water management, prevention of desertification, and support of meteorological networks.

All disasters are hence the result of human failure to introduce appropriate disaster management measures.

The Chinese Government will be hosting a high level Asian conference on disaster reduction in Beijing in September 2005 to take stock of progress and seek to raise the commitment in the region to the implementation of the Hyogo Framework.
