The following is a synopsis of the main issues discussed in the meeting of the Chairpersons

It was considered vitally important that the regional commissions be included in any approach by the functional commissions to supporting the Economic and Social Council's action plans and major events.

The committees were designed to institutionalize the exchange of information and coordination among key agencies responsible for natural resource management and climate change.

On 13 June 2005, the six Main Committees elected their respective officers for the sixtieth session.

Pursuant to resolution 58 316 and in order to facilitate the work of the Main Committees, the General Assembly decided to allocate item 116 to all the Main Committees for the sole purpose of considering and taking action on their respective tentative programmes of work.

It chairs key committees to establish corporate development and policy direction and to determine strategic orientation.

5. Requests the Main Committees of the General Assembly to ensure that the outcome of the Millennium Summit is taken into account in their work

In both protocols, the international community was requested to assist in the funding of a number of key commissions and economic programmes.

21. Requests the General Committee to take fully into account the above mentioned resolutions in the allocation of agenda items to the Main Committees

Requests the Secretary General to start, on a trial basis, a consultative process with the President of the General Assembly and the Chairmen of the Main Committees of the Assembly at the end of the main part of each session of the Assembly, with a view to consolidating reports on related subjects, if decided by the Main Committees

9. Requests the First Committee, in the light of the growing interconnectedness of issues before the General Assembly, to explore the forms of mutual cooperation with other Main Committees

The General Assembly decided to allocate item 116 to all the Main Committees for the sole purpose of considering and taking action on their respective tentative programmes of work.

Requests the Chairpersons of the Main Committees, at the end of their terms of office, to provide a short report on their observations and lessons learned to their immediate successors

Decides that time limits on speeches in the plenary and in the Main Committees shall be applied in accordance with rules 72 and 114 of the rules of procedure of the General Assembly

The United Nations and a number of international partners have agreed to provide technical support to help set up the key commissions to assist with the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

The General Committee may wish to bring to the attention of the General Assembly paragraph 3 of the annex to resolution 58 316 pertaining to the practices and working methods of the Main Committees.

The Chairman reminded the Committee that, in accordance with General Assembly resolution 58 316, a question time period had been introduced in the Main Committees to enable an exchange of view with the heads of departments.

H. Regional commissions

The organization of practical information sessions such as the current one should be replicated by all the Main Committees of the General Assembly, in the context of reform of the United Nations aimed at increasing its efficiency and effectiveness.

The President said that, in accordance with rule 5 of the rules of procedure, the Conference should proceed to elect two Vice Chairmen for each of the three Main Committees, the Drafting Committee and the Credentials Committee.

The General Committee may also wish to recommend to the General Assembly that the practice of not reproducing in extenso statements made in a Main Committee should be maintained for the sixtieth session.

Invite Arab national human rights committees to join regional federations of national human rights committees.

Most commissions had established a multi year work programme, which the Chairpersons considered to be a valuable planning tool.
