7. Issues relating to confidence and security building measures as well as those relating to the security of small States are receiving close attention of the Islamic Conferences of Foreign Ministers.

Other bureaux would continue to deal with issues and programmes relative to small island developing countries within their particular mandates and work programmes.

They made no distinction between small States and other developing countries in the provision of technical assistance and provided no special programmes to address development issues of small States.

Participation provided access to information on some major economic and social issues involved in the sustainable development of small island countries.

They build cases. They make cases.

The work programme on small and vulnerable economies should result in comprehensive responses to address the trade related issues identified for fuller integration of small and vulnerable economies into the multilateral trading system.

It is therefore necessary that the protection and security of small States remain a very pertinent issue among the concerns of the United Nations.

90. The present report has concentrated on issues related to the impact of small scale mining on the physical and social environment and the need for adequate legislation in this area.

Those of us who have been involved in the past months in the small island developing States process are keenly aware that many of the issues addressed in the Mauritius Strategy are those same important issues which the United Nations membership is now considering in the context of the upcoming Millennium review summit.

We now live in a world in which there has been a major recasting of international relations ranging from political to economic, environmental to humanitarian issues.

It included the Department of Cassation in civil cases and Department of Cassation in criminal cases.

This trend contributes to adjournments and high backlog of cases.

The process promoted collaboration and identification of issues and in many cases resolution of issues.

The situation is clearly unsustainable.

At that stage, however, stable recurrent funding must be ensured.
