We must follow up our promises with regard to alternative livelihoods.

We have committed ourselves to addressing those risks, including at the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

We have as our theme for the General Assembly implementation of our summit undertakings.

All of this is happening in spite of the commitments entered into at the Millennium Summit to fight poverty, disease and misery.

The outcome document we are about to adopt outlines concrete measures to ensure effective follow up to a number of commitments we have solemnly made over the past 60 years.

They told us unequivocally that progress towards the goals we agreed at the Millennium Summit, and towards the commitments we made at Monterrey, has been insufficient.

It also reflects the fact that we are clearly not making fast enough progress with regard to many of the commitments we have already made not least, in the case of development, the Millennium Development Goals.

Can we act as an international community, hold ourselves accountable for the many great promises and resolutions made here, restore our faith in this institution and have hope for a better future?

Is there the political will necessary to keep the promises made to our children?

However, we have in the past too often fallen short of our own pledges, which have been made but not fully delivered on, or scaled down over time.

Immanuel Kant teaches us that the circumstances in which we find ourselves must always be judged against the circumstances in which, but for chance, we might have found ourselves.

That is the stage at which we find ourselves.

Despite all such efforts, we, like many developing countries, know that much remains to be done in order to honour all the national commitments that have been made to our youth.
