UN Habitat is engaged in two global campaigns the Global Campaign on Urban Governance and the Global Campaign for Secure Tenure.

Over the past four years, campaigns have been launched in 10 countries, and joint activities between the Urban Development Branch, responsible for the Global Campaign on Urban Governance, and the Shelter Branch, responsible for the Global Campaign for Secure Tenure, were conducted in five of them.

The efforts by UN Habitat to promote pro poor, gender sensitive policy tools to improve urban governance have led to high demand by local authorities for training and advisory services.

The future impact of global governance rests on forging new alignments that facilitate the flow of vital knowledge and technologies from an increasingly diverse array of sources to urban populations worldwide.

In India, more than a million women are now at different levels of local governance in both rural and urban local governmental bodies (see E CN.6 2005 2 and Corr.1).

Seminal research was undertaken in analysing urban economic conditions, rural urban linkages and effective strategies for improving urban self employment and livelihood for the urban poor.
