The Australian Government is committed to maintaining a strong emphasis on equal opportunity for women in the workforce, and the promotion and implementation of equal opportunity principles in the private and public sectors.

UNICEF programming presence worldwide presents an opportunity to increase emphasis on hygiene promotion, even in countries without a UNICEF supported WASH programme.

ACWW aims to raise the living standard of women and their families through literacy, education and training through community development projects for income earning and for the promotion of agriculture, health, nutrition and childcare through the elimination of discrimination and of inequality of opportunity through promotion of international cooperation and understanding.

The Committee also requested the Government to provide information on the activities that were being undertaken by the National Institute for Women for the promotion of equality of opportunity and treatment in employment and occupation.

Supporting the monitoring of Target 10 in all countries will also provide an opportunity for UNICEF country offices to engage with national sectoral stakeholders on key sectoral issues, including hygiene promotion and water quality.

There is currently no policy on equal opportunity although opportunities based on merit' is one of the bases of recruitment and promotion in the public service.
