While the main problems related to the marine environment and to marine resources are within national zones, there are also obvious and huge challenges on the high seas.

The sea offers other economically valuable benefits to be exploited, such as genetic and biological resources.

The goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity are the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of the components of biological diversity, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
