Indeed, in the last round of trade negotiations, the Uruguay Round, the world's poorest region, sub Saharan Africa, was actually made worse off.

Moreover, the World Trade Organization s Doha Round of global trade negotiations desperately needs to be concluded, and the EU has made a number of positive moves in this direction by proposing vast changes to its export subsidies regime.

The collective strength of developing countries in international trade has also been growing, as evidenced by their success in putting the issue of market distorting agricultural subsidies on the agenda of the Doha Round of world trade negotiations.

Yet the Doha Round has fallen victim to basic misunderstandings first, about why countries trade, and, second, about how they trade.

Sri Lanka therefore called on the developed countries to ensure that the World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong and the whole Doha Round lived up to expectations.

Let us build on that promise and press ahead with the Doha trade round.
