State supervision over compliance with the requirements of health and safety at work is exercised by the Labour Inspectorate.

The survey carried out by the Labour Inspectorate provides valuable information at macro level.

Gender issues were also addressed by the National Human Rights Office, the State Labour Inspectorate, the Latvian School of Public Administration and the Central Statistical Bureau.

The studies carried out by the Labour Inspectorate only provided representative information about pay differences between men and women at macro level.

The Labour Inspectorate did comprehensive work in monitoring their situation and ensuring proper conditions of employment, including payment of at least the minimum wage.

Standards in state schools are monitored by the Office for Standards in Education, and in private schools by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

Free legal advice was provided by the Labour Inspectorate and the National Human Rights Office, and free legal aid was available in the country for those wishing to apply to the courts.

The Committee further recommends that the State party ensure the right to decent work and to provide sufficient resources to the labour inspectorate to enable regular and independent inspections of safety and health conditions in all sectors and to ensure that employers who fail to observe safety regulations are duly sanctioned.

The role of the State System of Accounting for and Control of Nuclear Materials is carried out by the Lithuanian Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI).

Two and a half months after terminating her employment contract, the author reported to the Labour Inspectorate that she had been struck in the right eye by a lemon on 2 July 1993 while working.

The Labour Inspectorate reported that there was no proof of an occupational accident, that there was no accident declaration and that the section supervisor stated that the author had never said that she had been struck in the eye.

A recent study by the Labour Inspectorate shows that in spite of policy efforts to prevent sexual harassment there is still a culture in the police service which allows male officers to act in a sexually offensive manner towards their women colleagues.

The health safety inspectorate uses slightly different criteria based on the Working Conditions Act.

Subsequently, the State party reported that, due to improvements in the Labour Inspectorate's working methods to monitor respect for the prohibition on child labour, statistics on child labour had greatly decreased and was now of marginal importance.

National supervision according to this law is made by the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate (SKI).

The judge suspended the hearing and ordered that a request for information be sent to the Labour Inspectorate, which reported that there was no record of the occupational accident and that the author had not reported having received a blow to the right eye on 2 July 1993.

Probes into allegations of corruption are ongoing and the parliamentary inspectorate against corruption reported on 16 February that it had submitted to the Office of the Public Prosecutor three cases of embezzlement from the State, totalling some 420,000 United States dollars.

In this connection, the Committee recommends that the State party consider ratifying ILO Convention No. 29 on forced or compulsory labour.

This will mean that the international inspectorate bodies will not involve themselves with the questions of the doubt raised by compulsory education.

The Committee notes with appreciation the State party's ratification in September 2002 of the Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention, 1999 (No. 182).

Rights to breaks (daily, weekly, annual), number of work hours and paid leave during State holidays are regulated by labour legislation and collective contracts.

In this connection, the Committee recommends that the State party consider ratifying the ILO Convention No. 81 concerning Labour Inspection in Industry and Commerce.

Labour laws do not yet provide cover to the entire Pakistani labour force.
