Special Climate Change Fund

An increase in both the general purpose and special purpose contributions was recorded during 2004, with the general purpose contributions amounting to US 10.5 million and the special purpose contributions to US 22.2 million.

Interest accrued under the General Purpose segment of the Industrial Development Fund is credited to that Fund.

The UNITAR General Fund is financed from voluntary contributions made by Governments, intergovernmental organizations, foundations and other non governmental sources, as well as from the programme support costs reimbursement income generated by expenditures of the Special Purpose Grants Fund.

Owing to a declining level of contributions to the General Fund and an increase in the number and scope of special purpose grants, support costs reimbursement income has gradually become the major source of income for the General Fund.

General purpose funds also finance priority areas not attracting special purpose (earmarked) contributions, thus providing programme flexibility.

The Adaptation Fund Purpose The Adaptation Fund was created to assist developing country parties that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change to meet the costs of adaptation.

The Nippon Foundation, chaired by Yohei Sasakawa, has set up a Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund for this purpose.
