The Special Envoy of the Secretary General for Tsunami Recovery made a presentation and engaged in an exchange of views with delegations.

Representatives of a dozen Member States, both in and outside the region, as well as his Special Envoy attended the one day meeting.

The Special Envoy stressed that the perpetrators of these atrocious and murderous acts should be made to face the full force of the law.

(e) To continue to cooperate with the Special Envoy of the Secretary General for Myanmar and the Special Rapporteur of the Commission on Human Rights on the situation of human rights in Myanmar

Brigadier General Kyaw Hsan, a representative of the military, recently told UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari that the marchers in the streets were bogus monks.

In the same vein, calls for dialogue and attempts to impose a Special Envoy on the parties were diversions designed to slow the process further.

France supports the recommendation of the Secretary General to launch a comprehensive evaluation of the situation and to appoint a Special Envoy for that purpose.

My Government will do its utmost to support him and the Special Envoy he will name in their efforts in this next and crucial phase.

It is important that the meeting take place before the planned departure of the Special Envoy from New York on the evening of 28 July.

(e) The Secretary General urged the authorities to allow his Special Envoy to return to Myanmar as soon as possible to continue his facilitation efforts.

The international community as represented by the Quartet and its Special Envoy, Mr. Wolfensohn should continue to focus its attention on all of those tasks.

In that context, my delegation commends the endeavours undertaken by Special Envoy Wolfensohn to address that situation and alleviate the plight of the Palestinian people.
