5. Commends the Secretary General for having sent a special envoy to Burundi

He appointed Mr. Robert Dillon as Special Humanitarian Envoy for Rwanda and Burundi to carry out the task.

Charles, then king of Spain as Charles I, sent an envoy to propose an alliance to the Shah of Iran between 1516 and 1519.

In that connection, we believe that the Secretary General apos s dispatch of a special envoy to Burundi is a positive initiative.

343. On 11 December 1992, I appointed Dante Caputo as my Special Envoy for Haiti.

On 13 January 1993, Mr. Caputo was also appointed Special Envoy of OAS.

In this context, it takes note with appreciation of the dispatch by the Secretary General of a Special Envoy to Burundi.

I dispatched a Special Envoy to Guinea Bissau to help ensure that presidential elections were conducted peacefully and transparently in June.

On 3 June 2005, the Secretary General appointed Kai Eide as his Special Envoy to carry out a comprehensive review on Kosovo.

I have accordingly decided, after the necessary consultations, to appoint Ambassador Edouard Brunner (Switzerland) as my Special Envoy for Georgia.

As a result of this relationship, Mr. Dante Caputo was appointed both by the Secretary General of OAS and by me as the Special Envoy for Haiti on 11 December 1992 and 13 January 1993, respectively.

6. Requests the Secretary General to appoint a special envoy in order to, inter alia, sustain the political will of the international community to support medium and long term rehabilitation, reconstruction and risk reduction efforts

We thank the Secretary General for following up on our request by appointing Under Secretary General Mr. Jonah as his Special Envoy for Burundi. We await with interest the report of the Secretary General on the situation in Burundi as a follow up to Mr. Jonah apos s mission.

I then appointed my Special Envoy for Zaire, Lakhdar Brahimi, to undertake a goodwill mission, having as its principal objective the exploration of ways and means for the United Nations to assist in finding a solution to the current political situation.

It is our conviction that the Secretary General should dispatch a special envoy to the countries in the region for the required consultations with those countries to facilitate the establishment of a nuclear weapon free zone in the Middle East.

The officer in charge of UNPOS led a delegation to Mogadishu on 1 and 2 May to encourage dialogue between the Transitional Federal Government members in Mogadishu and those in Nairobi.

He informed Mr. Beye that, in order to improve bilateral relations between the two countries, he would dispatch a special envoy to President dos Santos and furthermore propose that the joint Angola Zaire Military and Security Commission be reactivated.

The notice is dispatched when it is properly addressed or otherwise directed and transmitted to the supplier or contractor, or conveyed to an appropriate authority for transmission to the supplier or contractor, by a mode authorized by article 9.

On a different matter, the Chairman of the AU has appointed a Special Envoy on the question of protecting civilian populations in situations of armed conflicts with the mandate to formulate and conclude on behalf of the AU a draft agreement on the protection of civilian populations in situations of armed conflicts.

I have the honour to inform you that your letter dated 16 December 1993 (S 26912) concerning the appointment of Ambassador Ramiro Piriz Ballon to succeed Ambassador Ismat Kittani as your Special Envoy to Tajikistan has been brought to the attention of the members of the Council.

We are pleased in this respect to see Mr. Peter van Walsum appointed as Personal Envoy of the Secretary General and we assure him of our support in his mission, just as we do the new Special Representative of the Secretary General for the Western Sahara.

The international community apos s concern over developments in Burundi is clearly illustrated by the United Nations Secretary General apos s dispatch of a special envoy to that country and by the efforts of the Secretary General of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to consult with neighbouring Heads of State on the events there.

I also decided to collect as much factual information and data as possible concerning the nuclear issue of the Democratic People apos s Republic of Korea and for that purpose I dispatched a Special Envoy of the Chairman of the Movement of Non Aligned Countries to Pyongyang and subsequently to Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing and Vienna.

During the period under review, I designated Ambassador Tom Erik Vraalsen, Assistant Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway and former Permanent Representative of Norway to the United Nations, as my Special Envoy to South Africa for consultation with the parties concerned on political developments in the country.

334. In view of the unabated fighting in Abkhazia at the beginning of May 1993, I appointed a Special Envoy, Edouard Brunner, to Georgia to revive the peace process he undertook his first mission to the region from 20 to 31 May 1993.

In this context, in April 2005 the Quartet appointed outgoing World Bank President James Wolfensohn as its special envoy to oversee and coordinate the international community's efforts in support of the disengagement initiative, as well as to promote coordination and cooperation between the parties in this regard.

In the Sudan, after several years of stop start relief operations owing to security problems, the United Nations appointed a Special Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs to negotiate details of land and air corridors for the delivery of relief assistance that has been constantly affected by the ongoing conflict in the southern part of the country.
