As a result, when evaluating a POPs project proposal, the GEF may be able to identify ways to deal with non POPs substances (and thus achieve Rotterdam related benefits) at a relatively small incremental cost.

The financial mechanism for the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) is a funding mechanism.

They accumulate in the tissue of living organisms, which absorb POPs through food, water, and air.

They are summarized together with other relevant information available in document UNEP POPS COP.1 INF 5.

The submissions have been reproduced in the annex to background document UNEP POPS COP.1 INF 19.

Such co finance must still be for a project that is, at its core, a POPs project.

It was then as contained in document UNEP POPS INC.6 INF , revised to reflect intersessional comments from Governments and, as so revised, presented in document UNEP POPS INC.7 INF for further consideration by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee at its seventh session.

The Parties to the Convention will each elect to apply a number of policy measures that will contribute to the reduction or elimination of POPs releases, and these measures will vary from country to country reflecting the differing country situations and POPs problems.

The Co Chair drew attention to the objectives and possible outcomes of the meeting, as set out in the scenario note for the meeting (UNEP POPS EGBATBEP.1 INF 1), and the tentative schedule for the week (UNEP POPS EGBATBEP.1 INF 2).

To the extent that the capacity building needs of countries in their efforts to reduce eliminate POPs will often address more general chemicals management issues, the GEF, in supporting the POPs Convention, will strengthen the other chemicals convention processes related to chemical safety.

The development of national implementation plans (NIPs) on POPs, provide the opportunity for Parties to prioritize capacity needs.

The GEF may then be able to arrange co financing for the non POPs part of the project.

As described in documents UNEP POPS COP.1 30 and UNEP POPS COP.1 INF 26, the Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention organized four case studies within the scope of administering technical assistance under the Convention through identified institutions across varying regions of the globe.

Option 2 Urge the GEF to include more Rotterdam related activities under the POPs focal area Parties could carry through on Decision RC 1 14 by urging the GEF to more aggressively and proactively consider including Rotterdam related activities under the current POPs focal area.

The experts from Switzerland and the International POPs Elimination Network (IPEN) indicated their willingness to prepare such a document.

The possible modalities for a capacity assistance network were previously considered in the document UNEP POPS INC.6 19.

POPs are also a threat to biodiversity, and even have the potential to cause disruption at the ecosystem level.
