Conglomerates allow financial institutions to diversify their business, and combining with commercial banks allows investment banks to fund their operations using relatively stable deposits instead of fickle money markets.

Any amount that the General Assembly may decide to allocate to enable the Institute to continue its operations in 2006 and beyond would therefore need to be provided through an additional appropriation in the context of the operations of the contingency fund established by the Assembly in its resolution 41 213.

In addition, the payroll operated by the Fund is the largest in the United Nations system and the Financial Services Section in charge of that activity reports directly to the Chief of Operations.

Of that amount, 60 million is expected to be available in the Peacekeeping Reserve Fund, after taking account of new or expanded operations in the Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
