The library manages the Authority's specialized collection of reference and research materials focusing on matters relating to the law of the sea and deep seabed mining.

There is a growing interest for bioprospecting for deep seabed genetic resources.

We have invested heavily in the exploration of minerals in the deep seabed.

As required, the applicant has expended more than 30 million in research and prospecting in the deep seabed.

The workshops provided the best available scientific information on deep seabed resources and the ecosystems in which they are found.

The deep sea or deep layer is the lowest layer in the ocean, existing below the thermocline and above the seabed, at a depth of 1000 fathoms (1800 m) or more.

Industries and activities such as fisheries, shipping, and seabed mining are all regulated separately. No governance framework is in place for emerging high seas industries such as energy production.

Over the last several years, the Authority has convened a series of workshops on topics related to the deep seabed environment and its resources.

The International Seabed Authority can and is supposed to regulate mining activities in the Area in such a way that any negative effects on the marine environment are minimized or avoided.

The Committee expresses its deep concern regarding children working in hazardous occupations such as mining, often in precarious conditions that fall short of labour safety standards.

We also commend the Authority for its continuing role in providing training through annual workshops on the scientific and technical aspects of seabed mining and also on the critical area of protection and preservation of the marine environment.

The International Seabed Authority is actively preparing for the future exploitation of mineral resources in the international seabed area.

Mountaintop removal mining (MTR), also known as mountaintop mining (MTM), is a form of surface mining that involves the mining of the summit or summit ridge of a mountain.

Upon the completion of this phase, the Authority will be provided with recommendations regarding the recovery of the deep abyssal plain communities from disturbances by a test mining system.

The Government continued to implement measures to reassert its control over diamond mining through the issuance of more mining licences.

The Convention and the Agreement relating to the implementation of part XI of the Convention ( the 1994 Agreement ) adopted on 28 July 1994 by the General Assembly of the United Nations2 together contain the regime for the administration of the deep seabed and its resources.

And, because space exploration requires communications and control over vast distances, some of the applications could also enhance South Africa s lucrative mining sector after all, controlling machines under the ground is similar to doing so in deep space.
