Complete the destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles consistent with the Chemical Weapons Convention in a timely and effective manner

States parties to the Convention on Chemical Weapons should recommit themselves to achieving the scheduled destruction of declared chemical weapons stockpiles.

The destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles is continuing under international inspection, and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is functioning professionally.

In addition to the chemical weapons stockpiles, all of the 64 former chemical weapons production facilities declared by 12 States parties have been permanently inactivated.

The 168 Member States of the OPCW implement the Chemical Weapons Convention by declaring, securing, and destroying, under international on site verification, any chemical weapons stockpiles.

The stockpiles would then be destroyed and Syria would fully join the international Chemical Weapons Convention.

Under the provisions of this treaty, Iraq is considered a party with declared stockpiles of chemical weapons.

Rightly so elimination of Syria s chemical weapons stockpiles and a political process to end the war must occur simultaneously.

We welcome the report of the Director General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Rogelio Pfirter, that the six possessors of chemical weapons continue to destroy their declared stockpiles and that the process of securing stockpiles and verification of destruction is moving apace.

The treaty, which came into force in 1997, requires the declaration of chemical stockpiles, and the destruction of all chemical weapons, delivery systems and production facilities.

It is a matter of concern that the destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles by main possessors is falling behind schedule.

The six chemical weapons possessor States continue to destroy their declared stockpiles, which originally exceeded 71,000 metric tons of chemical agents and nearly 9 million munitions and containers.

One of the most important features of the Convention is the obligation for possessors of chemical weapons to destroy their stockpiles by specified deadlines.

DENVER The agreement on Syria s chemical weapons reached by Russia and the United States is important not so much for what it could mean on the ground which remains to be seen as inspectors begin to flow into Syria and, we hope, chemical weapons stockpiles begin to be destroyed.

In that context, the speedy and complete destruction of chemical weapon stockpiles is critical.

Ultimately, no stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction were ever found.

Australia signed the Chemical Weapons Convention in January 1993 and ratified it with the Chemical Weapons (Prohibition) Act in 1994.

Under the Chemical Weapons Convention Act 2003, the Mauritius National Chemical Weapons Authority has the duty of supervising the domestic implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and their Destruction.

Furthermore, it neither has chemical weapons manufacturing facilities nor does it possess such weapons.

India informed the United Nations in May, 2009 that it had destroyed its stockpile of chemical weapons in compliance with the international Chemical Weapons Convention.
