The yen s rising value raises the yield on Japanese bonds relative to the yield on bonds denominated in other currencies.

For example, individual countries government bonds could be replaced by Eurobonds.

Economists like to subtract the nominal government bond yield from the inflation indexed bond yield of the same maturity to get a market estimate of the inflation rate from now to that maturity date.

The bond channel doesn t work when bond yields are already low and the credit channel doesn t work when banks hoard liquidity and velocity collapses.

It could do so by buying Italian and Spanish bonds in the secondary market with the pre announced intention of keeping their sovereign interest rates below a certain threshold for a certain time.

This encourages short side speculation, which places downward pressure on the underlying bonds.

If Greece had remained outside the eurozone and retained the drachma, the large increased supply of Greek bonds would cause the drachma to decline and the interest rate on the bonds to rise.
