The High Commissioner welcomed the measures taken by the Government to destroy stored antipersonnel mines in compliance with the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti personnel Mines and on Their Destruction (Ottawa Convention).

Noting the accession of Afghanistan to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti personnel Mines and on Their Destruction,See CD 1478.

The Acting President Draft resolution XXVII is entitled Implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti personnel Mines and on Their Destruction .

All States members of the Community had acceded to the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti personnel Mines and on Their Destruction.

The Nairobi Summit on a Mine Free World, held in November and December 2004, provided the first opportunity for a review by the parties of the 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction.

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela acceded to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti personnel Mines and on Their Destruction in December 1997.

At the Nairobi Summit on a Mine Free World, a child addressed the States party to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stickpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti Personnel Mines and on their Destruction, contributing to renewed commitment by the international community eliminate the threat of landmines.

9. Decides to include in the provisional agenda of its sixtieth session the item entitled Implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti personnel Mines and on Their Destruction .

Following the destruction of these weapons the military forces retain only 986 mines, which will be used for instruction and training of deminers and explosive detection dogs.

The Convention does not address the right of States to legitimate self defence nor does it balance the rights and obligations of States parties to the Convention.

Strengthening post conflict demining efforts is the ultimate and most effective way to address the humanitarian concerns caused by MOTAPM. The civilian and humanitarian organization casualties inflicted by MOTAPM mainly occur in the post conflict period.

For those reasons, our delegation voted in favour of draft resolution A C.1 60 L.56, entitled Implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti personnel Mines and on Their Destruction .
