Improvement of port reception facilities and better waste management

Waste treatment facilities are not typically tourist attractions, but Ankara s novel integrated urban waste management system has rightly attracted global attention.

Only six municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina have facilities for purification of waste water.

The main source is direct disposal by households, followed by the impact of tourist facilities and run off from waste dumps (waste from land sources).

Some delegations expressed their support for the establishment of regional port waste reception facilities rather than requiring States to establish these on an individual basis.

Due to pressure to allow the rapid return of displaced residents, however, the JAEA demonstration projects proceeded only as far as establishing temporary storage facilities, intended as stopgaps until centralized waste conditioning, interim storage, and disposal facilities are available.

Specific initiatives to support water and sanitation investments could also be considered, such as partial capital grants or loans to municipalities for investing in sewerage and waste water treatment facilities.
