It focused on the multidisciplinary issues of water and sanitation and human settlements.

These priorities include water scarcity and pollution sanitation, safe drinking water and health gender mainstreaming in water and sanitation integrated water resources management transboundary water issues and disaster reduction.

Participants recommended greater attention in the outcome document to the issues of water, sanitation and human settlements.

The Government, in partnership with some non governmental organizations, is addressing issues such as sanitation, security and provision of food.

Following the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Senegal established the Ministry of Prevention, Hygiene Promotion and Sanitation (Ministère de la Prévention, de l'Hygiene Publique et de l'Assainissement) as the ministerial level institutional home for addressing sanitation issues.

Infrastructure, sanitation and environment in rural areas

Issues that affect water supply and sanitation in the United States include water scarcity, pollution, a backlog of investment, concerns about the affordability of water for the poorest, and a rapidly retiring workforce.

By 2015, Senegal aims to implement rural sanitation programmes and to make adequate sanitation available to about 80 per cent of the population.

A holistic approach to sanitation could include measures for changing attitude and behaviour as a complement to investments in sanitation facilities and infrastructure.

They also have sanitation and safe drinking water.

The latter also recognizes the importance of sanitation.
