Now, with drug companies increasingly seeking to develop medications that target particular racial groups, the long taboo subject of racial genetics has reemerged.

Canadians punish racial insults, but Americans do not, at least if the issue is simply one of protecting the dignity of racial minorities.

In addition, there is a need to respect diversity within populations, including the interaction of the criminal justice system with women, children, the elderly, racial, ethnic and cultural minorities, and people with disabilities. Those groups may be disproportionately affected by crime. The result may be both disengagement and alienation of some groups from the criminal justice system.
