In view of the biotechnological potential and vulnerability of living marine resources, we underline the need for efforts to ensure marine biodiversity and to prevent, reduce and eliminate pollution of the marine environment from ships and land based activities.

The Mediterranean Sea constitutes 0.7 of the global water surface and yet receives seventeen percent of global marine oil pollution.

We should thus address, for example, marine pollution, which respects no boundaries and must therefore be met with global action.

There is growing awareness in the region of the impact of land based sources of marine pollution, which is estimated to be responsible for about 80 per cent of all pollution entering the oceans.

Since the adoption of resolution 57 141, there has been a concerted effort to widen the scope of GMA from its main objective, namely, to combat marine pollution and prevent the physical degradation of the marine environment, to include living marine resources.

We attach great importance to the protection and conservation of the marine environment and its biodiversity. Therefore, we must redouble our efforts to combat and limit the pollution and degradation of marine ecosystems.

While not yet the subject of international regulation, noise pollution in the marine environment is responsible for changes in behaviour and for injuries that could lead to the deaths of marine mammals and other species.

We should not shy away from measures that would help to protect marine natural resources from pollution or illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing.

The involvement of IMO in Antarctic matters relates primarily to the prevention and control of marine pollution from ships and to maritime safety.

Iran states that its marine resources were exposed to pollution resulting from Iraq's invasion and occupation of Kuwait, and that the pollution resulted in reductions in fisheries production, especially in the Bushehr and Khuzestan provinces of Iran.

It is also noted that given its potential for causing transboundary pollution, marine debris is a global problem as well as a national one.

My delegation attaches great significance to the marine environment and supports the implementation of Part XII of the Convention, which deals with the protection and preservation of the marine environment and resources from pollution and physical degradation.

Another subject of concern is the issue of noise pollution and its effects on marine biological resources  a phenomenon that is new to many of us.

Education and training are needed for many sectors of society and the general public in order to raise awareness about everyone's responsibility to prevent marine pollution.

The Republic of Korea is also continuing to implement measures to protect the marine environment by preventing or reducing pollution from vessels and land based sources.

The Programme for the Assessment and Control of Pollution in the Mediterranean Region (MED POL), the marine pollution assessment and control component of the Mediterranean Action Plan Barcelona Convention, recently prepared an assessment of the situation related to coastal litter in the Mediterranean.

This year the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) funded the Agency's coordination of an extensive pollution survey of marine sediments from 35 shipwrecks sunk in Iraq's waterways.

It has long been recognized that one of the most serious and extensive threats to the health of the marine ecosystem is pollution from land based sources.

The pollution of the marine environment through our land based activities such as the dumping of waste, as well as unregulated shipping activities, has become a concern for all.

Pollution caused by discharge of solid wastes and litter into the sea is a significant cause of degradation of both the land and marine coastal fringe in the Mediterranean.
