Establishment of an inquiry

Members of the Council have before them document S 2005 60, containing a letter dated 31 January 2005 from the Secretary General, transmitting the report of the International Commission of Inquiry on Darfur.

The content of the letter was similar to that of the previous letter from the same Minister in July 2004 the allegations concerning ill treatment of the complainant were again refuted as unfounded furthermore, no direct answer was provided to the request that an independent inquiry be conducted.

However, during the second meeting, the Ambassador was handed a letter by the Minister in charge of GIS containing the Government of Egypt's formal answer to the renewed Swedish request for an inquiry.

I refer to your letter of 18 November requesting authorization from the United Nations for the Independent Inquiry Committee on the oil for food programme to continue in operation until the end of March 2006 and referencing your discussion with the Permanent Representative of Iraq in this regard.

I have the honour to inform you that the United Nations has received a request from the Chairman of the Independent Inquiry Committee, Paul Volcker, to maintain the operation of the Independent Inquiry Committee until the end of March 2006.

All of the great religions have traditions of fruitful interchange with and, indeed, support for scientific inquiry.

The Commission decided not to request the appointment of a Board of Inquiry and dismissed the complaint.

The Committee shall seek the cooperation of the State party concerned at all stages of an inquiry.
