A proposal from the Commission of the European Union for a new directive is currently under discussion by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament.

The European directive on water stipulates that all communities over 2,000 inhabitants have to have water purification facility and this directive is binding for all EU present and future member States, like Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The European Union Directive as well as domestic legislation in the United States and other countries operated on that assumption.

The ultimate goal of the project is adoption of new water sector legislation, harmonized with that of the EU, particularly the Framework Directive on Water (Directive 2000 60 EC, European Parliament and Council, of 23 October 2000).

The Bill implementing the European directive on the burden of proof in cases of gender based discrimination came into effect on 1 January 2001.

A directive of the European Parliament and of the Council of the European Union based on the principles of the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Credit Transfers was issued on 27 January 1997.

Other, non nuclear, facilities may be made subject to specific regulations derived from European directive 96 82 CE of 9 December 1996 (SEVESO II). The application of this directive concerns more than 1,200 establishments in France belonging primarily to the petroleum and chemical sectors.
